Banana Bread Brownies with Brown Butter Frosting
Ingredients:
For the Brownies:
- 2 eggs ($0.25)
- 3-4 ripe bananas (I used 4 medium) ($0.65)
- 1.5 cups granulated sugar ($0.35)
- 1 cup sour cream ($0.50)
- 1 stick of butter, melted ($1.00)
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract ($0.70)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour ($0.40)
- 1 teaspoon baking soda ($0.10)
- 3/4 teaspoon salt ($?)
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts ($0.78)
For the Brown Butter Frosting:
- 1 stick of butter ($1.00)
- 3 cups powdered sugar ($0.66)
- 1.5 teaspoons vanilla extract ($0.53)
- 3 tablespoons milk ($?)
Instructions:
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 13 x 9-inch baking pan and set aside.
- Prepare the Brownie Batter:
- In a large mixing bowl, beat together the sugar, sour cream, melted butter, and eggs until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
- Add the mashed bananas and vanilla extract to the mixture, blending well until combined.
- Gradually add the flour, baking soda, and salt, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- Fold in the chopped walnuts until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
- Bake the Brownies:
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it out evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the brownies are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly in the pan. The brownies should be warm but not hot when you frost them.
- Prepare the Brown Butter Frosting:
- In a large saucepan, melt the stick of butter over medium heat. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the butter turns a medium brown color and has a nutty aroma. Be careful not to burn it.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and gradually whisk in the powdered sugar, adding it a little at a time. The mixture will be thick.
- Add the milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency.
- Stir in the vanilla extract until well combined.
- Frost the Brownies:
- Pour the warm frosting over the slightly cooled banana bread brownies. Use a knife or spatula to spread the frosting evenly over the top.
- Allow the frosted brownies to cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.
