5L Scones Recipe
This recipe will yield soft, buttery scones with a delicious golden-brown crust. Here’s how to make the scones with the ingredients you’ve listed.
Ingredients:
- 8 cups of flour
- 8 teaspoons of baking powder
- 500g margarine (cold, straight from the fridge)
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
- 2 cups Amasi (fermented milk)
- 1 & 1/2 cups white sugar
- A little extra egg (reserved for brushing the scones)
Instructions:
Bowl 1: Preparing the Dry Ingredients
- In a large mixing bowl, combine:
- 8 cups of flour
- 8 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1 & 1/2 cups of white sugar
- 500g of cold margarine (straight from the fridge)
- Using your hands or a pastry cutter, rub the cold margarine into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. This step is key to getting the light, flaky texture of the scones.
Bowl 2: Preparing the Wet Ingredients
- In a separate bowl, beat together:
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
- 2 cups of Amasi
- Leave a small amount of beaten egg aside (for brushing the scones before baking).
Combining the Ingredients
- Pour the wet ingredients from Bowl 2 into the dry ingredients from Bowl 1. Mix gently until the mixture starts to form a dough. Be careful not to overmix; you want the dough to be light and airy.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll it out with a rolling pin to about 2–3 cm thick.
Shaping and Baking the Scones
- Using a round cutter or a glass, cut out your scones from the dough.
- Place the scones onto a greased baking tray, ensuring they’re slightly spaced apart for even baking.
- Brush the tops of the scones with the reserved beaten egg.
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (392°F) and bake the scones for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
Serving
Once baked, remove the scones from the oven and allow them to cool for a few minutes. Serve them warm with jam, cream, or your favorite spread!
Enjoy your fresh, homemade scones!
