Homemade Indian Tacos

Ingredients

For the Fry Bread:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup warm water

For the Toppings:

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 packet taco seasoning
  • Salad lettuce mix
  • Chopped tomatoes
  • Shredded Colby Jack cheese

Instructions

1. Prepare the Fry Bread:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, 3/4 teaspoon of salt, and 3 teaspoons of baking powder.
  2. Gradually add 1 cup of warm water to the dry ingredients, mixing with your hands until a dough forms. The dough should be soft but not sticky.
  3. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes.
  4. After resting, break off pieces of dough and roll them into golf-ball-sized balls. You can make them slightly larger if you prefer bigger pieces of fry bread.
  5. On a floured surface, roll each ball into a 1/2-inch thick circle, approximately 6 inches in diameter.

2. Fry the Bread:

  1. Heat about 1-2 inches of oil in a medium-sized saucepan over medium-high heat.
  2. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the dough circles into the oil. Fry until the dough is golden brown and puffs up, which should take about 2-3 minutes per side.
  3. Flip the dough and fry the other side until golden brown.
  4. Remove the fry bread from the oil and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Repeat with the remaining dough.

3. Cook the Ground Beef:

  1. In a large skillet, cook 2 pounds of ground beef over medium heat until browned and cooked through, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks.
  2. Once the beef is cooked, drain any excess grease.
  3. Add 1 packet of taco seasoning to the beef, following the instructions on the seasoning packet (typically involves adding a small amount of water and simmering for a few minutes).
  4. Stir well to combine and let the beef mixture simmer until the sauce thickens and flavors meld.

4. Assemble the Tacos:

  1. Place a piece of fry bread on a plate.
  2. Top with a generous portion of the seasoned ground beef.
  3. Add your preferred toppings. For a classic Indian taco, use a salad lettuce mix, chopped tomatoes, and shredded Colby Jack cheese.
  4. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes:

  • You can double the fry bread recipe if you’re cooking for a large family or group.
  • Feel free to customize the toppings based on your preferences. Popular choices include sour cream, guacamole, salsa, onions, jalapeños, and more.

Enjoy your homemade Indian tacos, a delicious and filling meal perfect for any occasion!
